Dining in the Dark-Building Trust & Resilience in times of Change & Uncertainty

Dining in the Dark-Building Trust & Resilience in times of Change & Uncertainty

A 1-day experiential & reflective program that supports the Corporate Social Responsibility efforts for The Singapore Association of Visually Handicapped (SAVH).

About this program

Do not take our sight for granted. We have a fixed mindset & judgement that the blind cannot do this and can only do that. In fact, the unsighted are better than us with sight. In this impactful experiential and reflective program, participants will experience Dining in the dark as a blind person, drinking and eating using cutlery and pouring their drinks in total darkness. The amazing insight is the experience of being served by a sight impaired server from the Singapore Association of Visually Handicapped (SAVH).

Due to the rapid and radical changes in Industry 4.0 transformation, individuals, team members and leaders face concerns, uncertainties and the fear of moving out of their comfort zone to an unknown zone. Individuals, team members and leader could be limited by their fixed mindset and are unable to stretch their performance and potential to embrace changes and move into new roles that are different from what they are doing. Moving into a growth mindset and the ability to overcome challenges and uncertainties is essential for organisations, leaders and teams so that they can adapt, build resilience and thrive during times of continuous changes.

When in “darkness” (Fear and Uncertainties), do you trust the system, the process, the leader, the team members and your colleagues? The Dining in the Dark experience reinforce the common values, desired team behaviours at work, trust, communication, interpersonal working relationship, adaptability, team interdependence and empathy of the leader and his/her team.

From a fixed to growth mindset and to “Benefit Mindset”, the Dining in the Dark experience also enhances the team collaboration and synergy across different generation, cross departments and functions through win-win collaboration and achieving team benefits together as high performing team that is ready to embrace change and overcome challenges along the way.

“Kindness is my core”. This is my identity that defines my values and to have an empathetic approach towards people and tasks. I practise servant leadership as part of personal and professional development through CloverHearts (Singapore), a voluntary group that I established with my ex-students. My life goal is to “Inspire youth into volunteerism. Develop volunteerism into altruism.”

Teamwork is important and crucial in volunteering to serve the community to our best abilities. It requires a great sense of responsibility and commitment from every volunteer to provide sustainable support to the beneficiaries.

Singapore Association of Visually Handicapped (SAVH) is one of the VWOs that CloverHearts supports regularly. We collaborate with SAVH to create a revised “Dining In the Dark (DITD)” programme that provides an experiential and reflective dining session for the participants. Through this programme, participants are able to develop empathy and compassion to better understand the resilience of the visually impaired (VI) and how they overcome adversities through a Growth Mindset. Quoting my belief that “Empathy builds effective communication and trust within a team”, DITD is also a platform for me to identify individual’s strengths and alignments and increase team dynamics for a common vision. With that, I am able to lead them to support various voluntary initiatives for the elderly, children, donation projects and VI.
